Graphic Design: Milton Glaser

You can see Milton Glaser’s artwork below and above; The first time I seen his work is on a graphic design book, his designs are showing neatly on the book. The color and line are all very simple, but it comes out an interesting and mysterious effect. It really shocked me and inspired me to use this way to create me line draft. COLOUR: The colors are mainly from cold color scheme, but sometime there’s still a small part that will use warm color, for example, red and yellow. All of his design didn’t got a strong visual impact, however, the lines and colors combine together， It's deeply rooted in the hearts of the people and give people a impressive feeling. His design more like a collage, as we know, Milton Glaser always design for the charity or some meaningful events. His design is not only the surface of the pattern, but also has a deep meaning, which is also the most interesting. Through the color contrast and conversion to reflect his deep meaning, and this makes the audience more able to understand the meaning of his design and feel touched. For example, if his whole design is using cold color scheme, he will use a warm color to emphasize the part he wants to. VIEWPOINT & PERSPECTIVE: I think some of his design created by color, some of his designs are created by perspective and overlapping form. Although the paintings more seem like a flatten style, the color are created by digital software, but he uses collage sometimes by overlapping different images and photos together. So, I think it depends on the design of him. His designs are almost tidy and regular, different color blocks with different colors in. So, I think his designs created by both colors and overlapping forms. COMPOSITION: I think some of the composition got some important negative spaces in addition to positive forms, for example the second design from the left side with a big pipe in the middle. You can see it got a large light brown empty space without any shape in it. However, in the middle part of the design, the pipe part, you can see there’s a large light brown empty space without any shape in it. This makes an interesting feeling emphasizes the middle part of the design and got a strong comparison. LINE & SHAPE: The lines of Milton Glaser’s design is one of the most interesting part for me, because if you didn’t watch the design carefully, you’ll think it’s straight line, but if you enlarge the design, you’ll see he use lines with little curves on, they’re not all straight lines. That’s why when you look at his design, the lines give you a flouting feeling. The lines are all combine with straight lines and curve, and the shape of them formed a regular thing in our daily life, some of them even hard to tell because they got an unusual shape with individual colors in each shape. These remind me a Chinese traditional skill, which is enameling, it got a golden outline from the shape, which is just like Milton Glaser’s works sometimes, so I used enameling to do a goldfish work. This is fully related to my theme, and can try some new skills, too. In my opinion, I think Milton Glaser’s design, is a metaphor of the current social situation or events, is a very important benchmark of the times, it emphasizes that every human to know what was happening recent time.

So, now I’m going to do some enameling work to have a test with Chinese traditional craft to find some inspiration about my first line draft outcome, and it’s also a big challenge for me because I’ve learned about how to do enameling works. Also, I’m didn’t know which pattern and color I will use for my enameling work, so I looked through Milton Glaser’s design and decided to do goldfish which is inspired by the pigeon design. The color of it I’ll use the design of pipe’s color and I’ll leave the empty space which got no color, to be the background. After that, I’m doing my goldfish enameling, now. In the next part of this page, I’ll present the outcome of my enameling and a brief process about how to make a enameling by yourself. And Milton Glaser give me a lot of inspiration about graphic design, too. Here comes some photo about my goldfish enameling piece.
